For years, I found myself in leadership roles I never asked for.

Co-captain. General Manager. Community leader.

And every time, the same whisper: “You're not supposed to be here.”

I was introverted in a world that celebrated extroverts.

Thoughtful in a culture that rewarded fast talkers.

I'd deliver on impossible projects—and still wonder if I was doing it "right."

The Turning Point

A Monday morning meeting at Ameritech Cellular.

Our President was famous for his rage—the kind where his face turned purple. The General Managers were upset about a pricing plan and he was furious.

The Data Dudes — a separate group — were about to walk in and defend it.

The thing is I had designed that plan. They were about to take heat for my work.

Nobody volunteered for those meetings. I walked in anyway — uninvited to stand behind what I had built.

The President was visibly shocked. Not just that I showed up — that I chose to.

That moment earned his respect. A place in his inner circle.

But more importantly: It showed me something I'd been missing.

I had been leading all along. Just not the way I thought leadership was "supposed" to look.

My thoughtful presence. My intuitive read on people. My willingness to walk into fire when integrity called.

These were leadership gifts.

I was the last to see them—because I was looking for someone else's version of power.

What I discovered:

You already have what you need.

The work isn't becoming someone else.

It's recognizing who you've been all along.
